Troop 873 Summer Camp

From June 12-18, we were at San Isabel Scout Ranch!!!  We had a ton of fun doing merit badges of many types from wilderness survival to metal work to archery, rifle shooting, and shotgun shooting!  What pics did I miss?  Point the pictures out on Shutterfly, and I’ll put them on the site!

Chatfield March 2015

Our troop decided to take a trip to Chatfield for a two hour service project. We went around picking up trash and found some crazy stuff (a vodka bottle, hairspray, and a shirt to name a few)!

Blue Hole and Perch Lake Diving Trip

Our troop recently took a three day scuba diving trip to Blue Hole and Perch Lake, New Mexico. Everyone on the trip who went to get certified was able to get certified, and that has never happened on the first try in our troop.

Blue Hole is an 82 foot deep diving area fed by an underground river that keeps it at a steady 61 degrees. Since there are few fish, people put interesting toys and objects in it to make it more appealing. When we dove, we saw such things as toy motorcycles, a toy radio, and a cow skull.

Perch Lake is about a mile away from Blue Hole. It is a shallow lake that offers a huge tourist attraction. When we dove it, we saw a sunk plane, and felt a sunk jeep.

January Kiva Koshare Indian Outing

On January 4th, some of our scouts and parents went on the Koshare Indian Kiva Outing. There, we went to Old Bent’s Fort, and toured around, before eating dinner, and going to the Koshare Indian Museum. After looking around, we watched a show in the indoor Indian Kiva with the Koshare Indian Dancers. The Kiva was also where we spent the night before heading back the next day.

On Monday, December 16th, Troop 873 had it’s winter Court of Honor. There, the troop recognized rank advancements, merit badges, and other special awards. Aside from this, the troop also had Ryan Schroeder’s Eagle Court of Honor as well. Congratulations to Ryan, and all of the other scouts who were recognized there!

Eagle Scout Scientific Study

Recently, Mr Ostravich sent me a link to an interesting article about scouting. This was a summary of a scientific study about eagle scouts. In the study, they compared qualities that eagle scouts typically have to scouts, and non scouts. It turns out that eagle scouts are more likely to be healthier, smarter, and better citizens than scouts or non scouts. The article also explains how becoming an eagle scout relates to these matters.
